Are you, like us, addicted to smash burgers? Then you’ll definitely want to try the Onion-Wrapped Flying Dutchman. What exactly is this burger, and where does it come from?
I’m disappointed that we still don’t have the iconic chain In-N-Out Burger in the Netherlands. Unfortunately, I’m also not optimistic that this will change anytime soon, so we have to make do with a pop-up every few years. Last year, it was in Amsterdam-Oost and it was a huge success. The Flying Dutchman, the most popular burger of the moment, also comes from this burger chain.
What is the Flying Dutchman burger?
The standard Flying Dutchman consists of two beef patties and two slices of cheese. That’s it. Perfect if you don’t want any carbs… But perhaps a little boring? That’s why the burger currently going completely viral is the Onion-Wrapped Flying Dutchman; it has a grilled onion on both outer sides. That may sound a little strange, but it looks so incredible that I can’t imagine it tasting anything other than amazing too. The only downside: eating this burger without making an absolute mess is quite a challenge.
Apparently, people are willing to overlook that, because by now all of TikTok is filled with it; the way the onions are caramelized in particular seems to be hugely popular. Incidentally, burgers without buns have been a hit at In-N-Out for years; for example, by replacing them with lettuce or tomato. Or, as now, with onion — which is also said to add exactly the kind of crunch the burger needs. You can also customize it a little yourself, for example with jalapeños.
How to make the popular burger at home
If you want to make it at home, you absolutely can, because it’s really very simple: two smashed burgers, two slices of Cheddar, and two large caramelized onion rings. Want to recreate In-N-Out’s Animal Style? You can do that too; their secret sauce consists of mayonnaise, ketchup, pickle (finely chopped), vinegar, sugar, and yellow mustard. You’re welcome.
