Eke Bosman, better known as Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, ate his first frikandel as a baby, hates vlammetjes, has devoured at least 1,000 burgers in his lifetime, suspects there is more mayonnaise in his body than blood, and shares his best and worst snack reviews on FavorFlav every other week. This time: a corona special, because what do you snack on during a pandemic?

Snackspert: “Logically, I’m putting my restaurant reviews on hold for the time being. First, because they’re of no use to anyone right now, and second, because the hospitality industry is already having a hard enough time. I will continue reviewing supermarket products and, to a slightly lesser extent, delivery—depending on what is responsible. So don’t worry, you can still come to me for the latest tips heeeeeeuuuuuuuuu.”

Seriously divine
Vegetarian bitterballen, Lidl

The first one! Lidl’s vegetarian bitterballen. Working from home is still working, so vegetarian bitterballen are still bitterballen; why should I care that there’s no meat in them? I just want something tasty, period. And Lidl has done a pretty good job, because these are genuinely very good! Nice and crispy, and the ragout is spot-on. Perhaps a little too salty, but it’s absolutely rich in flavor and—and now I’m going to say something very strange for many meat lovers—perhaps even tastier than the standard beef bitterballen you order in some café where they still serve beer for €1.90. Great purchase, especially now. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Butcher’s Choice, New York Pizza

In times when we’re not really allowed to touch one another and a Dua Lipa track with the lyrics ‘LET’S GET PHYSICAL’ is high in the charts, we can say that things are happening rather unexpectedly. For example, a new pizza from New York Pizza being tastier and offering more love than an average song by Gers Pardoel. I’m talking about this Butcher’s Choice, a pizza with so much sauce that an average porn actor/actress calls to say they’re interested. Because what a surprise this is. Lately, I’ve torn enough things down and judged them critically, but this one is genuinely good. Why? It’s a pizza with a lot of substance. It has plenty of meatballs, salami, red onion, mozzarella, and an unbelievably thick layer of sriracha mayonnaise, making every bite a party for your mouth. It’s not the best pizza ever, certainly not, but it’s so much tastier than an average pizza from this chain. And that’s a huge compliment. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Tomato ketchup, Mutti

At a time when we’re raiding our supermarkets for toilet paper, I wonder: sure, it’s all well and good that we’re wiping extra, but are we wiping the results of quality food out of our digestive systems? Soon we’ll have good toilet paper but bad food for days on end. We don’t want that. That’s why I’m giving you a tip in advance, because since we’re all staying home en masse, we’ll undoubtedly be making toasted sandwiches more often. I always swore by Heinz tomato ketchup, but recently I discovered this new tomato ketchup from Mutti at Albert Heijn. You know, that delicious tomato sauce for pasta—but now for toasted sandwiches. What a relief that Italy’s best tomato producer is now making ketchup too, because this sauce is excellent with a toasted sandwich. With this ketchup, I can actually taste the tomato flavor, which you don’t get as quickly with the simpler ketchup varieties. And it isn’t too salty either. I don’t normally review sauces, but in these exciting days I want to point you toward what you’ll need most in the days ahead. Hurry to Appie and get that ketchup. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
