The Toastie Revolution That Will Change Your Life

What is the perfect toastie? You could start quite a debate about that. Is it cooked in a pan? Which cheese do you choose? Are you allowed to make it with brown bread? Cody Davidson takes a completely different approach: he makes a toastie with a tortilla.

That’s alarming, and understandably so. A tortilla? No bread? Breathe in, breathe out. Try to follow Cody’s line of thought; you make a quesadilla with cheese and a tortilla too, right? But in a pan. And this clever guy thought: why not in a toaster? Brave, certainly, because if that experiment goes wrong, you’ll have melted cheese in inaccessible places in the toaster, which you can effectively write off. Fortunately, Cody proves to have nerves of steel, and very coolly demonstrates his ideal cheese pockets made from tortilla and cheese on TikTok.
The essence: folding perfectly
The key lies in folding the tortilla. Cody does it very casually, but pay attention, because there’s some thought behind it. Fold the tortilla too narrowly and the cheese will spill out. Don’t turn the toastie over halfway through cooking and you’ll end up with one dark-brown side and one pale-white side. None of that is ideal, so follow the video’s example closely and, in no time, you’ll have melted cheese and a hot tortilla on your plate.
Culinary? Don’t be ridiculous
Culinary reviewer Meghan Splawn of The Kitchen tried out the recipe and experimented with grated cheese. It makes no difference. She’s genuinely super enthusiastic about this new way of making toasties. Like a real foodie, Meghan adds a piece of avocado for the photo and fantasizes about other fillings: perhaps vegetables, or chicken? Don’t kid yourself, Meghan—you know as well as everyone else that cheese alone is more than enough and that a toastie like this doesn’t need anything culinary at all.
