The ‘World’s 50 Best’ restaurants of 2023 have been announced

Every year, chefs from all over the world come together for the announcement of the World’s 50 Best Restaurant. During this nerve-racking evening, the top-tier chefs wait anxiously to find out where their restaurant has landed on the prominent list. This edition also has a new number 1—and it is the Dutch restaurants that are missing.

The organization of World’s Best Restaurant decided in 2019 that, from that year onward, restaurants could only go home with the coveted title of number 1 restaurant in the world once. Since then, the winners, last year’s restaurant Geranium, have become part of the ‘Best of the Best’ list. This list is a Hall of Fame that restaurants are added to, meaning they can no longer appear in the following lists. The World’s Best Restaurant was organized in Valencia this year.
At number 1
The winner of 2023 is restaurant Central in Lima, Peru. Central is run by chefs Virgilio Martínez and Pía León. At Central, Peruvian cuisine and the country’s varying elevations are central. The dishes on the chefs’ menu are therefore of an extraordinary level, each entirely dedicated to one of the elevations and its ecosystem. An emotional Martínez thanked his fellow chefs, colleagues and mentors while accepting the award. “It’s not about winning, or the competition between restaurants, but about what we all love doing most every day, and continuing to pursue our dreams.”
The top 4
Spain’s Disfrutar climbed one spot and finished in second place. Followed by restaurant DiverXo in Madrid and Asador Extebarri in Atxondo (Spain) at number 4. This year, one of Brazil’s most delicious restaurants also made the list: A Casa Do Porco in São Paulo. A must-visit if you love pork!
Unfortunately, the Dutch Michelin-starred restaurants fell behind this year. However, Zeeland top chef Sergio Herman managed to secure 39th place on the list with his restaurant The Jane in Antwerp. The Dutch chef of The Jane, Nick Bril, was recently named Chef of the Year 2023 by Gault&Millau Belgium.
