These are the 100 best dishes in the world

Which dish really makes you go absolutely wild? Maybe an amazing Pad Thai? A true Italian classic, such as spaghetti aglio e olio? Or can nothing beat a traditional AVG’tje for you? TasteAtlas researched people’s favorite dishes worldwide and has come up with a surprising top 100. Spoiler: traditional Dutch food didn’t make the list. Whaaat?!

It’s not the only top-100 list TasteAtlas has published recently. They also compiled a top 100 of the best cuisines in the world. Italian cuisine topped that list, with Japan close behind. Does Italy also come out on top in the top 100 best dishes?
100 best dishes in the world
The answer: no! For the highest-rated dish, we even have to travel to another continent. Of the 271,819 valid votes cast in the election, Brazilian picanha emerged as the winner. (We previously tipped it as the BBQ steak of 2023.) The South American meat dish received the highest average rating from voters. Picanha, or rump cap, is hugely popular in South America and especially in Brazil, where it features on the menu at every churrascaria (Portuguese for barbecue). Picanha always has a layer of fat that makes the meat extra juicy and flavorful.
Traditionally, picanha is seasoned only with coarse salt, but picanha with a simple marinade is also delicious. Jord Althuizen also shared a fantastic picanha recipe with us.
Numbers 2 and 3
For number 2 on the list, we’re heading to the other side of the world once again. To Malaysia, to be precise. Roti canai, a flatbread resembling Indian roti, has been lovingly embraced by many foodies worldwide. The dish itself is fairly simple. Yet it has a lovely, lightly sweet flavor and a delicious texture. Roti canai is crispy, buttery and flaky all at once. It is eaten with curry. Want to make it yourself? We have a delicious and easy roti canai recipe for you.
At number 3 is another dish from Asia, this time from Thailand. It’s called phat kaphrao. It is a meat dish (made with pork, beef or chicken) packed with flavor. Basil, garlic, sugar and Thai chili are important flavorings, as are soy sauce, fish sauce and oyster sauce. It is often topped up with green beans, bell pepper and onions. Delicious!

Traditional Dutch dishes are missing from the list. And that while we rank a respectable 45th in the top 100 best cuisines in the world. Huh? Where are the poffertjes with powdered sugar? And the all-time classic boerenkoolstamp?
Italian dishes are present in abundance, by the way. Naturally, with the title of ‘best cuisine in the world’ under your belt. The highest-rated Italian dish is pizza Napoletana. And yesss, we have a bellissimo recipe for that too!
