These are the 100 best cuisines in the world (and just look at the Netherlands!)
What is the very, very, very best cuisine in the world? That’s super subjective, of course. If you love curries, Indian cuisine is probably your favorite. And if you don’t like pasta at all (how is that possible?!), you probably won’t choose Italian cuisine. Still, TasteAtlas has compiled a top 100 of the best cuisines. Fun fact: Dutch cuisine scores pretty well!
TasteAtlas collected more than 500,000 reviews for the top 100, of which more than 350,000 were ultimately valid. These included 271,819 reviews of dishes and 80,863 reviews of (local) products. Based on these reviews, a top 50 of dishes and products was created for every country. The cuisines were then ranked based on the average ratings of each country’s highest-rated dishes and products. That’s quite a mouthful, I know.
The cuisine of all cuisines
Drumroll… Or, well. I’m pretending the result is very surprising and exciting, but I don’t think you’ll be surprised by which cuisine takes first place. Italian! Foodies around the world voted en masse for the delicious food that comes from Italy. From Pasta Carbonara to Risotto Alla Milanese, we simply think everything that comes out of the Italian kitchen is the very best. As a devoted fan, I understand that – although I would also have bet on French cuisine.
Places 2 through 5
Japan takes second place on the list. Remarkably, the country of sushi (and the absurdly delicious Kewpie mayo) scores just as highly as number one. Still, it has to surrender the top spot, thanks to the incredibly high ratings for Italian pizza. In third place, we find Greek cuisine. Greek pitas with lamb kebab, moussaka and tzatziki are apparently hugely popular with us. One place lower, we see Portuguese cuisine. I’m sure that’s because of the worldwide love for pastéis de nata. And fifth place? That goes to Chinese cuisine. FavorFlav’s Sharon, who is addicted to Chinese pancakes with Peking duck, understands that all too well.
And what about Dutch cuisine?
Well, we don’t score badly at all! We’re in a respectable 45th place. So, on the higher end of the list. Somehow, we’re always a little surprised when Dutch cuisine scores well. So many great cuisines to choose from, and yet our little frog country receives a nice rating. Nice! Could our AVG‘tje also be popular beyond our borders? Meh… TasteAtlas’s research shows that it’s mainly our Dutch cheeses that go down well. Understandable, although the stamppot and the pancake deserve some praise too.
Hopefully, the circle birthday party will remain a national secret for a little while longer. Or do you think a slice of liver sausage and a dry cheese stick belong among the highlights of Dutch cuisine?
