AVG lovers take note: at Den Boerenstamppot restaurant, you can enjoy traditional Dutch fare for next to nothing

Pasta at the Italian. Sushi at the Japanese restaurant. Burritos at the Mexican. So many cuisines, so many choices. But what if you’re craving traditional Dutch fare? Just a delicious AVG meal, but somewhere other than home? In Breda, they know exactly where to send you: Den Boerenstamppot.

Admittedly, AVG is actually a real childhood trauma for me. My mother is a star in the kitchen, but AVG wasn’t always a success when I was growing up. Dry potatoes, limp, soggy green beans, overcooked meat: you probably know the drill. But when it’s prepared properly—potatoes with gravy, al dente green beans with nutmeg and a fresh, juicy piece of meat—AVG is truly irresistible. (Kudos to you, Mom!)
Besides my mother’s kitchen table, I can also pull up a chair at the tables of Den Boerenstamppot. Right in my own hometown, Breda.
Soup, mash and custard
Den Boerenstamppot’s menu is simply an ode to Dutch cuisine. It features dishes you’ve undoubtedly eaten at your grandparents’ house or at that lovely older aunt’s place at some point. For a starter, you can choose from, for example, a bowl of tomato soup or hussar salad. For the main course, you can opt for boiled or fried potatoes with vegetables and meat, such as green beans, peas and carrots, schnitzel or a meatball.
Mashed-potato dishes, bami and spaghetti also regularly feature on the menu. And dessert? Think of a delicious bowl of vanilla custard, yoghurt or ice cream with chocolate sauce. The menu changes daily and is announced on the restaurant’s Facebook page every day.

The cost? Practically nothing
Perhaps the very best thing is that you can eat out here for next to nothing, nada, zilch. You choose 3 courses from the menu and pay €12.50 for them. You used to be able to eat there for just ten euros (and in the distant past, even less!), but well—inflation. And these days, you can hardly do a full grocery shop for €12.50 either, right?
Den Boerenstamppot: a little farmhouse in the middle of the city
Den Boerenstamppot is located right in the middle of Breda’s nightlife district, in a side street off Havermarkt. Yet from the outside, it could easily be a little farmhouse in the countryside. Red-and-white checked curtains hang behind the windows, the frames are dark green and there are flower boxes filled with cheerful blooms. Fancy pulling up a chair here? Reserve your table via Facebook or give the restaurant a call. It’s a popular spot, so don’t leave it too late!
