Recipe: how to make an Egg McMuffin at home

The times when I feel like going to McDonald’s or can be found there are actually never in the early morning hours. And secretly, that’s quite a shame, because I think the breakfast at McDonald’s is pretty good. Well; the Egg McMuffin, anyway — I think it’s incredibly delicious. But lucky for me it’s very easy to recreate at home — and so this is now my standard breakfast on Saturday or Sunday mornings. Delicious.

Admittedly, it is missing that real McDonald’s flavor, but in this case I consider that a plus. This McMuffin tastes a little less chemical, and is simply incredibly delicious. Tip: if you do want that Maccie touch, or are very hungry (or have a hangover that needs dealing with): add a homemade burger patty, and you’ll have your own version of the Sausage Egg McMuffin.
The Egg McMuffin in 4 steps
1. Spread one teaspoon of butter on both inner sides of the muffin, and place them in a pan over the heat until both inner sides are nicely toasted. Then remove them from the pan and place them on a piece of aluminum foil.
2. Add another teaspoon of butter to the pan and fry the bacon until nice and crispy — or less crispy if you prefer it that way.
3. Place a ring about the size of the muffin in the pan (for example this one) and crack the egg into it. You can fry the egg however you like; for the Egg McMuffin, break the yolk. Then pour 180 milliliters of water into the pan, cover it with a lid and cook the egg for about two minutes.
4. Place the bacon on the muffin, the fried egg on top of that and a slice of cheese on top. Close the muffin with the top half and wrap it in aluminum foil. Place this parcel on the still-hot pan (the heat can be turned off), and turn it over occasionally for two minutes so that it warms through properly from the heat of the pan. And voilà: your Egg McMuffin is ready!
Personally, I do add some sauce afterward, but it’s certainly good without it too. And it saves you another trip to McDonald’s…
