McDonald’s changes its menu and vegetarian fans are not happy
I’m a fan of the Big Mac, don’t get me wrong. But still: the McRib still hasn’t returned, and we can’t find Curly fries anywhere on the menu. We’ve never even had the Szechuan sauce for dipping chicken nuggets here in the Netherlands! People in America have been crying out for it for years, and when it was recently available again at a handful of locations, there was chaos. Seriously: fights. The Big Mac runs deep for some people, that’s clear. And now they’ve caused another controversy.
Fortunately, not in the Netherlands, but on the other side of the North Sea: the United Kingdom is in an uproar. After the Maccies reopened during the coronavirus crisis, many people had really missed their food. So much so that McDonald’s couldn’t really handle it all anymore. And the name says it all, of course, but with fast food it’s pretty essential that people actually get that food fast.
To keep things moving a little, some adjustments had to be made to the menu. In other words: things had to be removed. And what do you think, did they take those gross fish burgers off the menu that no one ever orders? No way, are you kidding? No, they removed the Veggie Dippers.
So what’s left for vegetarians?
Well. Nothing, really. Okay, that’s a bit exaggerated, because they can still order three vegetarian things: mozzarella sticks, fries or a fruit bag. PARTY. Seriously, what are those people at head office thinking? I understand that if you eat vegetarian, you don’t visit the Big Mac very often (although their veggie burger is perfectly decent, the one we have here), but now surely you’ll stay away altogether?
As you can tell, I can get pretty angry about this. A major plus is that here in the Netherlands we still have Veggie Nuggets on the menu, and we never had those Veggie Dippers in the first place. But still, this is a bad move. The following was stated in a response from head office: “Hi, we have recently removed the Veggie Dippers from sale. We will return these products to the menu as soon as we can.” That sounds a little illogical, because you removed them from the menu yourselves, didn’t you? In principle, couldn’t you put them back on it again immediately? To be continued…
