These are the 5 most popular fast-food restaurants in the Netherlands
Did you know that there are more fast-food restaurants than ‘regular’ restaurants in the Netherlands? Bizarre, but absolutely true. Because despite the fact that our country is bursting with delicious restaurants, you still come across a snack bar or pizzeria more often on average.
Over the past five years, the total number of eateries in the Netherlands has risen significantly—by around 23 percent, to be precise. That means there are currently just over 36,000 establishments, the majority of which are fast-food restaurants. Of these, 3,896 were added, compared with the number of regular restaurants. There were around 1,000 fewer of those, according to hospitality trade magazine Misset Horeca.
Incredibly popular
Fast-food restaurants include the trusted old snack bars around the corner, pizzerias, grillrooms, burger restaurants and kebab shops. These are also the five favourites. The reason fast food has suddenly become incredibly popular may well be explained by the coronavirus pandemic. There has been clear growth especially since 2020, the year it all began.
North or South Holland?
There is also a difference depending on where you live in the Netherlands and how many places serving quick bites you have nearby. Flevoland has seen growth of 40 percent, but South Holland clearly has the most fast-food restaurants.
