These are the best (and worst) cheese sticks from the supermarket
What’s your favorite snack from the deep-fried snack counter? For me, one rises head and shoulders above the rest: cheese sticks. (KaasTENGELS, yes, not kaasSTENGELS.) Blazing-hot melted cheese in a crunchy coating; you can wake me up for that. Well, they do have to be good quality. Otherwise, just let me sleep. So that raises the question: which supermarket cheese sticks are the best?
Of course, there’s only one man you can ask that question: Eke Bosman, aka Snackspert. As it happens, the snack guru has rated cheese sticks before—and they received a very high score. They were the Old Amsterdam cheese sticks and the spicy TopKing sweet chili cheese sticks. These varieties aren’t included in Snackspert’s test, although TopKing is assessed with another variety of cheese sticks (aged cheese).
Snackspert’s harsh verdict
Snackspert starts with Lidl’s cheese sticks. Unfortunately, not a good start: ”No, Lidl’s are not good at all. They taste more like cheddar than aged cheese.” Next up: Albert Heijn. ”Oops, we’ve got a leaker!” says Snackspert, pointing to the piece of melted cheese on the stick. ”The packaging says these contain aged cheese, but I think they taste more like young matured cheese.” Then it’s Jumbo. Snackspert is deeply disappointed: ”This is truly terrible. It’s more like a breadstick with cheese in it. Way too much dough as well.” Ouch.
So are Duca’s better? Not in appearance, ”because it has a big pimple”. A cheese pimple, that is. Doesn’t sound very appealing. Fortunately, it’s what’s inside that counts. Snackspert thinks the cheese in the Duca cheese stick is good, but there is a ‘but’: ”the dough is much too thick.” And then last but not least (as it turns out): TopKing’s cheese sticks. Eke was already wildly enthusiastic about them, and that’s still very much the case. ”By far the best. This one is simply right. It’s like a very healthy relationship.” See, isn’t that what we’re all looking for in life?
The best supermarket cheese sticks
Snackspert has spoken: the top five is known. And it is as follows:
1: TopKing
2: Duca
3: Albert Heijn
4: Lidl
5: Jumbo
