These are the tastiest tomatoes you can buy at the supermarket

Honestly: supermarket tomatoes are often not great. Watery, lacking in flavor and expensive on top of that. These are too. €3.59 for a 180-gram pack. Ouch. But what a flavor! You can hardly leave them behind when you see them in the supermarket, bright red and shiny like Christmas baubles in April. Buy a pack of Looye Honingtomaten and you’re spoiled for life. You won’t want anything else. What makes them so special?

Caprese, but Michelin-worthy

My colleague Jeske is addicted to tomatoes. She even wrote an ode to the tomato. I’m not, but these tomatoes… they do things to you. They transform your simple caprese into a plate you’d spontaneously award a medal for. Your standard cheese-tomato sandwich? Bam – suddenly it’s a lunch made by a top chef. Whether you make a skewer with mozzarella and basil, very corny!, or simply pop them straight into your mouth: the flavor is intense, sweet and fresh all at once.

So what makes this tomato so special?

For starters: only 20 to 25 percent of the tomatoes Looye grows earn the honorable title ‘Honingtomaat’. Only the very best pass the weekly taste tests and have the looks and flavor to make the cut. Think:

  • Intensely red and shiny like a lacquered candy
  • Firm bite, juicy but not mushy
  • Honey-sweet flavor with a fresh, tangy finish
  • Aroma reminiscent of grass, roses and a hint of honey

And that’s not all. The tomatoes also received three stars from the International Taste Institute. That means they were blind-tested by more than 200 taste experts, including Michelin chefs. And yes – the Looye tomatoes scored a whopping 91%. As a fan, I completely get it.

The only downside, apart from the price, is that they don’t make me any more likable. Quite the opposite: greedy. I want to eat them all myself. But sharing is caring, I do know that, so I toasted sourdough bread, rubbed a little garlic over it, drizzled on some good olive oil, halved some Honingtomaten and placed them on top. A little sea salt, a basil leaf, done. And the points I scored with my colleagues? I can live off those for a while yet.

And they’re Dutch-grown too

By the way: this taste sensation comes straight from home. Looye grows its tomatoes in the Netherlands. Fresh, local and without any fuss. Culinary candy, straight from the greenhouse. I heard, somewhere in an echo, a colleague grumbling about the plastic lid, which could easily be made of cardboard.

The Rolls-Royce of tomatoes

Yes, they’re expensive. But you get so much flavor in return that your mouth will spontaneously start smiling. Try one and you’re sold. We say: treat yourself and upgrade your salad, drinks spread or lunch. Looye Honingtomaten really are the Rolls-Royce of tomatoes. #nospon #justlove (but hey, Looye… if you’re reading this, DM me for my address 🙂
