These will be the restaurant trends of 2024

Yesterday I wrote about the trends in the hospitality industry that we saw in 2023, but it’s also fun to look to the future: what can we expect next year? Of course, we can’t know for certain, but it is fun to speculate about the restaurant trends of 2024.

And that is exactly what Technomic has done: predictions for the hospitality industry worldwide. What are we all going to experience? Here they are: the upcoming restaurant trends.
Hospitality trends for 2024
1. An innovative year
We will see many innovations, especially when it comes to the major restaurant chains and fast-food brands. Think of new products following one another in quick succession. The ordering process will also be made easier. Chains will need to be more creative to remain relevant if they want to retain us as customers and not miss the boat. I’m very curious about these developments; I already got a glimpse of them at the end of this year when McDonald’s opened their ‘spin-off’ restaurant CosMc’s for the first time.
2. Korean food will become the biggest trend
We have been fans of Korean cuisine for years. And we are far from the only fans; these instant ramen, for example, are more popular than ever. That popularity will now also translate to restaurant menus; not only will we see more Korean restaurants, but other restaurants will also succumb to tteokbokki rice cakes (finally!). I think this is a wonderful trend. Will we also get more Korean corn dogs in the Netherlands? Oh, I hope so. And will we all start drinking soju en masse?
3. Oat milk is here to stay
Another very welcome trend, if this really happens (I have my doubts..): paying extra for plant-based milk will become a thing of the past. That would be great, because you often still have to pay extra for your oat milk, soy milk, almond milk or another plant-based alternative. As far as I’m concerned, it’s a great plan, because it is of course wonderful that plant-based alternatives are offered without us having to pay through the nose for them.
4. Eating out alone will become increasingly normal
I found it terrifying when I first went out to eat by myself. I was genuinely nervous about it, even though it all turned out perfectly fine, of course. (Almost) no one thinks it is strange when you are sitting alone at a table. In fact, solo dining will become a real trend next year, and many restaurants—especially chains—will respond to this by offering solo deals.
