They also call it the diabetes aisle: you’ll find these American products in supermarkets all over the world

Of course, we know perfectly well that you can’t tar all food in America with the same brush. And that there’s also incredibly pioneering work being done in the field of local, sustainable, and healthy food, and that there are plenty of cities and places where you might not even be able to find a bad meal if you tried. But still… if you ever take a peek at the ‘American’ aisle in supermarkets all over the world, you’ll get quite a shock!

Because, in short, you could call it the heart-attack corner: these are aisles filled with the unhealthiest junk you can possibly imagine. Breakfast ‘cereals’ (uh-huh, you mean bits of sugar that have had a wheat stalk waved past them), liquid marshmallow in a jar (did you know you can also make marshmallows yourself?!), pretzels that apparently can only be eaten with a layer of chocolate, and soooo muuuuuch fake cheese… Look and shudder!

‘Did they get it right’? Haha, what are you supposed to answer to that as an American? If you’re from health-crazed Los Angeles, you’re probably deeply offended by this…

And in Ireland they’ve also set up a lovely red, white, and blue aisle. The Statue of Liberty is keeping a close eye on things to make sure nothing healthy accidentally gets put in there!

Sugar in every shape and size, but, admittedly: dill pickles are absolutely delicious. Crunchy, salty, perfect on a tuna salad sandwich!

In Colombia, they also like to make room for ready-to-use convenience. Don’t forget to stop by the vegetable section too, guys…

And even in Myanmar, Americans feeling homesick can get their hands on some Jello!

In Spain too, you can fill your cart with marshmallows in every size, the inevitable Hershey’s chocolate sauce, and four types of frosting in a jar.

There you are, an American in a German store, dying of embarrassment…

And in Scandinavia too, the amazement is considerable when you come across an aisle of United Flavors or Jello…

And finally, we came across this photo from New Zealand, and secretly our hearts skipped a beat. Because look! Next to some strange American stuff there’s our not-particularly-healthy Chocomel (but hey, it’s a classic ?), but also: rye bread! Phew, super healthy! And nasi goreng mix, hahaha. We’d better quickly tell them that you can make the tastiest nasi goreng without packets of seasoning!
