This baker sells the tastiest Easter bread

Paasbrood

Easter bread with almond paste and then a thick layer of (salted) butter—delicious! But where can you get the tastiest? For that, you have to go to Made, as shown by the Easter bread competition of the Real Bakers Guild.

It is an incredibly old tradition on the Easter table: a richly filled Easter bread with nuts, spices and dried fruit. De volmaakte Hollandsche keuken-meid from 1746 already contains a recipe for it. With quite a lot of eggs, too—don’t be alarmed: 24 eggs went into it. Along with butter, milk, nutmeg, cinnamon, currants and candied citron.

The manuscript Recepten voor de Keuken/Recepten voor Menschen by Aarnout van Citters from the early 18th century also contains a recipe for ‘paasch-broot’, with flour, currants, egg whites, buttermilk, saffron, cinnamon, sugar, yeast and butter.

That last recipe in particular sounds very tasty to me; I wonder how it would have fared in the Easter bread judging by the Real Bakers Guild.

Real Bakers Easter Bread Judging

During the Easter bread judging, in which the Real Bakers compete for the title of ‘Best Easter Bread in the Netherlands’, 67 bakers submitted a total of 112 Easter breads this year for the preliminary rounds of the judging. Yesterday, an Easter bread was purchased from the shop of each of the twelve finalists. Notable: appearance in particular is scoring highly this year.

The tastiest Easter bread

Van der Steen, the Real Baker from Made, took home the grand prize. Regular customers have known for some time that you can buy wonderfully delicious Easter bread here. Van der Steen also won the trophy in 2016 and has reached the final every year since then.

Jeroen van der Steen reacted enthusiastically to his victory: a beautiful loaf whose delicious flavor and generous filling made all the difference. “YES! I’m so happy about this!”

Second place this year went to Sjaak Doeleman, the Real Baker from Werkhoven, who has often impressed with almond pastries but is now on the podium with his Easter bread for the first time. Willem Steenbergen from Meppel took the bronze.
