There have been quite a few remarkable findings about breakfast. Breakfast like a king? Turns out it isn’t necessary at all. And did you know that you can actually have pizza for breakfast rather than muesli? All fun to know, but there’s only one thing we’re really interested in. WHAT should we have for breakfast? What’s tasty, nutritious and filling? A Harvard University doctor has provided the answer we’ve been waiting for.

The Standard American Diet isn’t exactly healthy. The Standard American Diet is literally SAD. Lots of sugar, lots of fat, lots of refined carbohydrates… Enough to make you cry. Okay, secretly I’d love to have pancakes and yogurt with chocolate muesli for breakfast every day. But I’m afraid my body would really cry over that.

Protein and fiber

According to Harvard physician Monique Tello, it’s important to eat a breakfast with enough protein and fiber. Protein is important for your muscles—which is why you’re advised to eat plenty of protein after exercising. Fiber makes you feel full, meaning you’re less likely to reach for more food in the next few hours. What’s more, it gets your digestion going. And that, in turn, is great for a strong immune system.

Breakfast with the golden trio

Okay, but what’s the best thing to have for breakfast? Tello says your breakfast should ideally consist of three components as standard: berries, nuts and seeds, and some kind of yogurt. Feel free to vary things up. Crazy about raspberries? Go for it. Love oatmeal? Be my guest. And if Greek yogurt is your thing, I’d say stock up on it. The important thing is that your nuts are unsalted and that it isn’t muesli or granola with sugar. It’s also best to avoid yogurt with lots of added sugar. Plant-based yogurt is perfectly fine, as long as it isn’t sweetened either. With berries, nuts and seeds, and yogurt, you get enough protein and fiber to start the day off right.

More of a savory person? Then, according to Tello, you’re best off eating whole-wheat bread with eggs. Which you should obviously not smother in sauce.
