This is a particularly tasty TikTok tip if you can’t smell or taste because of coronavirus

FavorFlav’s Wieke already described how incredibly awful it was to have coronavirus, partly because she could no longer taste or smell. (By the way, this man tried a number of extremely strange flavor combinations out of coronavirus desperation). And although doctors cannot give unanimous advice on what works against the (hopefully temporary) loss of these senses, there are countless tips to be found on social media from people who have or have had coronavirus. Including this one, which looks so delicious that even without coronavirus we might just have to try it!

The Canadian student Kemar Gary Lalor got a tip from his mother that she had picked up during her Jamaican childhood. After testing positive for COVID-19, she tried this trick and noticed that she could smell and taste again after a few days. Of course, we don’t know whether that wouldn’t have happened otherwise, but we do believe this must be so incredibly delicious that we can almost smell it through our screens! After Kemar and his little sister also appeared to benefit from it, he posted this TikTok video.

The video garnered millions of likes and a whole lot of comments. Some people were delighted by the effect, while for others it didn’t necessarily work or they had suggestions for adjustments. One doctor (Karan Rajan of the British NHS) confirmed that retraining the sense of smell is a good exercise when it has been lost; another (James Palmer of the University of Pennsylvania) says there is little evidence that this simple method of smell training works. But you also have little to lose by trying it, so go ahead and give it a try.
To be honest, I think this is a really great culinary tip even without coronavirus: smoky citrus with gently melting brown sugar… add a scoop of the most delicious vanilla ice cream and you’re all set, whether it’s dessert or a Netflix snack!
