This is an almond mom: the type of mother going viral on TikTok

‘Are you hungry? Here, eat a few almonds and chew them really well.’ A statement that sounds almost unbelievable (and perhaps even laughable), but was unfortunately actually said. By Yolanda Hadid, to her model daughter Gigi Hadid. This statement gave rise to the term almond mom. And that term is now going viral in all kinds of TikTok videos.

It’s not surprising that those videos are going viral. It’s simply too bizarre for words to offer a child a few (read: 2 or 3) almonds when they say they’re hungry. Three almonds? No, Mom, that really won’t satisfy my hunger, sorry.
Toxic diet culture
An almond mom is a mother who has an unhealthy relationship with food (and her body). She projects that insecurity onto her own children. This can be very clear and direct—for example, by offering her child a single almond when they’re hungry—or through subtle comments. If a mother is also constantly fixated on weight and appearance when it comes to other people (‘I ran into the neighbor, and she’s gained quite a few kilos too!’), then that will inevitably affect her children. The behavior of an almond mom can therefore genuinely be seen as part of a toxic diet culture.
Viral on TikTok
The episode in which Yolanda Hadid makes the comment to her daughter Gigi is now more than 10 years old. Yet people keep talking about it because they find it so bizarre. And how do you express that nowadays? Exactly, with a TikTok video. Quite a few videos have already been made depicting the almond mom in all kinds of ways.
@alexlight_ldn Almond mom 🥲 Does this resonate with how you grew up? I’m so sorry if it does 😞 and cheers to everyone trying to break the cycle 🙌🙌 #almondmom #almondmoms ♬ original sound – Alex Light

We’ll take a cookie mom instead
What makes the whole story even more bizarre is that eating almonds helps reduce your calorie intake. You do have to eat more than 2 or 3, though—eating almonds only has an effect at around 30 to 50 nuts—but still. Can’t another type of mom step up? A cookie mom sounds much more fun to us.
