This Is How Much a Big Mac Cost in the Year You Were Born
Coincidentally, I was talking the other day about how bizarrely expensive everything has become. Admittedly, we got onto this subject because a beer cost just 80 euro cents on a Monday evening in Amsterdam 15 years ago, and by now… Well, quite a bit more. Just imagine when we still had guilders.
Another thing that has gone up considerably in price is the Maccie. You can see that best by looking at their pride and joy, the Big Mac. It’s been around since the ’60s. And believe me, for today’s price you could buy a lot of Big Macs from back then… Yes, yes, inflation and that sort of thing haven’t been taken into account, but still. How much did a Big Mac cost in the year you were born? Side note: the prices are in dollars.
1960s: 45 cents
My God. What a paradise. A Big Mac for 45 cents. How amazing would it be if McDonald’s ever did a ’60s week—and we could buy a Big Mac for this price? Just an idea for the suggestion box.
1970s: 65 cents
Yesss, a hefty price increase to no less than 65 cents. You’d still be a fool to pass one up at that price, and you couldn’t leave the fries behind either: a portion cost 46 cents back then.
1980s: $1.60 for a burger, $2.59 for a meal
This is quite a steep price increase, really. These were also the years when the meal was first introduced, for just 99 cents more than a burger on its own. And you got fries and a soft drink with it. Take me back, please.
1990s: $2.45 for a burger, $4.59 for a meal
I find those price increases pretty steep. The difference between a burger and a meal has really grown, in particular. And what’s more, I can still vaguely remember these prices. When I hadn’t been to McDonald’s for a while, I was surprised to find that a meal was still around €4.50, but that isn’t even close. A large meal now costs €7.50!
2000s: $2.39
Very weird: apparently, the price actually dropped compared with the previous decade? Disappointing sales figures? Did they eventually realize they may have been a little too enthusiastic with their prices? Either way, these were good times to eat at the Maccie.
2010s: $4.19
And there’s that price increase again. Unfortunately, it’s a price that looks all too familiar to me. A really significant increase compared with ten years earlier, but hey, we pay it gladly.
In 2020: $4.95 for a burger, $7.89 for a meal
In the Netherlands, a meal costs €7.50, so that isn’t all that different from American prices… That’s a lot of money, really. But apparently it doesn’t matter much, because I’m now craving that Big Mac with fries and Coke so badly.
