This is the #1 childhood trauma during dinner

Dinner: a source of stress for many children. The worst childhood trauma of all? Dessert. Huh? Yes, really. Because the way it was served still gives adults shivers. Everyone remembers the moment when you were only allowed to leave the table once your plate was empty. Not necessarily a stupid rule – savory first, sweet afterwards – but the execution was sometimes a nightmare, it seems.

Dessert on top of your food

In some families, we heard, dessert was only served once your plate was empty. And if that didn’t happen quickly enough? It was simply poured over it (!): Petra says, “If I didn’t eat quickly enough, I wouldn’t get dessert, or it would be poured over my food. Never helped, by the way.” Mariette experienced this at a friend’s house: “I couldn’t finish my endive mash, and bam, dessert was poured over it. I never went to play there again before I had finished eating.”

Dessert on the same plate

Had you finally emptied your plate of Brussels sprouts, potatoes or meatballs, dessert would be served on the same plate, over the leftovers. Custard over stuck-on potato or gravy, ugh. Sylvia remembers: “I still shudder at the thought. My children get their dessert in separate bowls.” Els and Sytske recognize the trauma too: “No matter how clean you ate your plate, finding a piece of potato or a grain in the custard was horrifying!”

Simone adds: “It was the same at our house back then. The horror when there was a piece of potato in your custard!” Miriam: “There was always something from dinner in my dessert, no matter how hard I tried to eat everything on my plate.”

It could be even worse

A friend tells us about the trauma of her daughter’s classmate: if she didn’t finish her dinner, it was thrown into the blender the next morning and served as breakfast. Yes, really. That little piece of potato in the custard suddenly seems sacred…

Your biggest trauma

We all know it: the battle at the dinner table during childhood. Some moments stay with you forever. What gave you the biggest shivers? Spill the beans! (We promise: we won’t pour custard over it).
