This Is the Most Hated Food in the World

kind eten vies

Nothing is as personal as taste. What I detest, you might find heavenly. Still, there are a number of things most people agree are absolutely inedible. If you say you hate fries, you’ll probably get more strange looks than if you say you throw up at the thought of organ meat. Just to name an example — there are plenty more. Below is a list of foods that are hated worldwide.

And since taste is not something you can argue about, I’ve also collected some recipes featuring this most hated food. For when you’re not a hater, but a lover.

Broccoli

I can completely relate to this one. I’ve never liked broccoli. Not the taste, not the smell and especially not the texture. I can’t help it, but I always feel like I’m working my way through a tree. And yes, I’m almost 30. So it’s not that strange that I detest it, because it ranks 10th on the list of the most hated foods in the world. Think broccoli is the bomb? Then you definitely want to try this recipe for broccoli and spinach soup by Yvette van Boven.

Onions

Together with garlic, onions form the basis of practically every savory dish. In fact, you might almost think a recipe was wrong if it doesn’t begin with “sauté the onion.” Still, we all have opinions about onions — and not positive ones. The biggest sticking points: the texture and sharpness. We find them absolutely awful. Are you an onion fanatic? Show your love by making these fantastically delicious French onion gnocchi.

Brussels sprouts

Ah, we remember this one from childhood: hating Brussels sprouts. If there’s one vegetable you really had to learn to eat as a child, it’s these little green balls. We particularly find the bitter taste and texture of Brussels sprouts disgusting. I have to say that over the years I’ve really come to appreciate them more. That’s what growing up is called, I suppose. My favorite Brussels sprouts recipe: these loaded fries with Brussels sprouts. I’m still a bit of a child at heart when fries are my favorite food.

Okra

Okra isn’t very well known in the Netherlands. At least, it’s not a vegetable that often features in a typical Dutch meal. Perhaps that’s partly because it’s fairly widely hated around the world. The main reason: it’s slimy. And nobody is happy about that. Still, if prepared properly, it can be incredibly delicious. Try these okra fries, for example. Fries make everything better, after all — as we already saw with the Brussels sprouts.

Turnips

Turnips are on the “forgotten vegetables” list in our country. Could it be because of the intense worldwide hatred directed at this vegetable? Many people find the taste woody and simply unpleasant. I’m afraid this root vegetable will never win the popularity contest against its big brother, the potato.

Raisins

Hated raisins? Yes, really — they rank fifth on the list of the “Most Hated Foods in the World.” And that’s despite the fact that we practically grew up with them (did you also get little boxes of Jip and Janneke raisins as a child?). Younger people in particular seem to care little or not at all about raisins. The reasons: their wrinkled texture and sourish taste. Well, I can’t relate to that. I’m off to HEMA now to get a bag of raisins.

Blue cheese

This is one I personally can’t relate to at all, but I do understand it. Blue cheese isn’t for everyone. It’s incredibly sharp, and many people are disgusted by the idea that it’s full of mold. Can’t get enough of blue and moldy? You’re gonna love these hasselback potatoes with blue cheese and hazelnuts. A very surprising combination that might convert the blue cheese haters in your life in one fell swoop.

Anchovies

Anchovies have a very distinctive, strong flavor that you really have to love. Plus, they simply don’t look all that appealing. Those are the main reasons this little fish ranks third on this list. Here in the editorial office, we clearly disagree. In fact, we think anchovies deserve an award or a pat on the back. Do you agree? Then you’re bound to be very happy with this recipe for insanely delicious chicken with anchovy butter.

Olives

Anyone who throws a party and puts out a bowl of olives can expect the evening to end in one of two ways: either with a trash can full of olives or with an olive-free pantry. It all depends on whether you invited an olive lover who wolfs down all those bowls. Since olives rank number two on the list of the “Most Hated Foods in the World,” I consider that unlikely. If it does happen (and you’re still looking for an extra-delicious snack for your party), try making this whipped feta and olive dip. The olive lover will love you.

Candy corn

A bit of an anticlimax on this list, because we don’t really eat candy corn here in the Netherlands. Still, it proudly takes the number-one spot. Candy corn is a rather old-fashioned American candy that is mainly eaten around Halloween. One well-known nickname: Satan’s earwax. Does that say enough about the taste and texture? Many people think it tastes like grain, while online I’ve also read marzipan, butter and warm vanilla. That gives me a bit of an error. Is it really that disgusting or not?

This Would Be My Number One

The number one on this list is miles away from the food I would put at number one: cilantro. I can name dozens of people who detest this herb. There’s even an international day dedicated to it: I Hate Cilantro Day. And wouldn’t you know it, that day happens to be today, February 24. Coincidence or not?
