Okay, we’re not going to talk about pineapple pizza. If you like Hawaiian pizza, go for it, I’d say. It could be worse. I once heard that someone’s favorite pizza – perhaps it goes without saying, but this person was not Italian – was a pizza with döner kebab, canned tuna, gorgonzola, olives and garlic sauce. And I even respect that. I mean, I don’t have to eat it, but otherwise, fine by me. Our colleague Minne from Italiamo is secretly hoping for a similar reaction when she shares her personal favorite.
Pizza with fries
My personal favorite is pizza patatine e würstel, or pizza with fries and a kind of large frankfurter sausage cut into slices. From the moment I first tasted this pizza, I signed up for a lifelong craving. I understand if you’ve already checked out, but hang on just a little longer. You really have to try it. This is the absolute, absolute, absolute best filthy pizza on the menu in Italy. And on top of that, the safest choice; I’ll explain why.
First of all, this pizza is known as a children’s pizza in Italy. That’s because, even if you have a limited palate, this pizza never disappoints. The crispiness of the salty fries and the factory-created smoky flavor of the würstel, combined with a crispy pizza crust and tomato sauce, is quite simply heaven. You can eat this pizza either ‘bianco’ or ‘rosso’, meaning without or with tomato sauce; my advice would be rosso. I also found this pizza to be an excellent choice to order on dates—nice and provocative.
Naples is the birthplace of this pizza and also the ultimate destination for everything related to fries and würstel. In Naples, they’re huge fans of both frying and pizza. So it didn’t take long before one plus one plus one added up to three. You can say a lot about Neapolitans, but they certainly know what tastes good.
