This is the grossest food museum in the world

Have you always wanted to know what the world’s stinkiest cheese smells like? Or (horror!) taste fermented shark fin? Then the Disgusting Food Museum in Sweden is the place for you.

Every country has its own traditions and customs. For example, we eat 76 million herrings every year, while having breakfast with a bowl of tripe in Colombia is perfectly normal. And we’re incredibly curious about all those unusual and unfamiliar ‘dishes’ from other countries.
Deep-fried bat
During this exhibition, you can not only admire various foreign delicacies, but also smell and even taste them. Think fermented soybeans (according to Michelin-starred chef Onno Kokmeijer, the grossest dish ever), deep-fried bat, spicy rabbit heads or a bull’s penis. Um, yes, pretty disgusting (and intense!). So people regularly throw up. In fact, it happens so often that the museum keeps track of guests’ vomiting! Alongside lots of (to us) disgusting things, you can also taste typically American Jell-O pie and Icelandic liquorice, which are (to us) fairly normal.

The artistic idea
Behind every artistic expression, there is of course a deeper idea. With his most disgusting food exhibition, its creator hopes to change people’s perception of what they find disgusting. “Current meat production is incredibly bad for our environment. That’s why we need to come up with other options as quickly as possible before it’s too late. People still feel disgust at the idea of eating insects or are sceptical about artificially produced meat. If we can change these opinions, it could probably help us find environmentally friendly sources in the future.”

Where can you see it?
The exhibition has a permanent location in Stockholm and will soon also pop up in countries including Germany, Japan and the United States. Don’t forget your sick bag!
