This Is the Most Expensive Ice Cream in the World

The Guinness Book of Records has a new addition: the most expensive ice cream in the world has recently been included in it. And if you’re now thinking: how expensive can ice cream possibly be? Well: extremely expensive. But then again, you do have a scoop of gold in your hands.

Because there is genuinely gold in this scoop of ice cream. But the gold leaf isn’t the only ingredient that makes this ice cream so expensive: it also contains a rare type of white truffle.

Whether that’s a tasty combination, I’m not entirely sure (in any case: truffle in ice cream, does that taste good?), but it is certainly expensive: $6696 per scoop, or 873,400 Japanese yen — where this ice cream is sold. It also consists of sake lees (called ‘sake lees’) and Parmiggiano Reggiano. All in all, this seems like quite a special mix of flavors to me…
The flavor is called byakuya (‘white night’ in Japanese) and was created by chef Tadayoshi Yamada. If you’d like to try it (and have the money to spare), you’ll need to visit Cellato in Tokyo — that’s where you can order it. They also have the ‘Starry Night’ ice cream on the menu, which contains black truffle (as well as ingredients such as chocolate and yuzu). Well, if you’re in Tokyo anyway…
