This is the tastiest chocolate sprinkles from the supermarket (and you wouldn’t expect it)
It’s my ultimate guilty pleasure: a slice of white casino bread with a thick layer of butter and a huge pile of chocolate sprinkles. De-li-cious. But then the question is (besides: what exactly is that ‘slag’ in hagelslag?): which chocolate sprinkles do you sprinkle on top? There can only be one that’s the tastiest, right? The AD test panel investigated and the result might surprise you.
The chocolate sprinkles test panel
It consists of three members: Marieke ten Have (chocolatier and winner of Best Bonbon 2022), Maikel Vet (pastry chef at the Conservatorium Hotel and owner of chocolate shop MaDe) and Teuntje Smits (owner of sweet-treat shop Zoete Post). The three experts tested eight different chocolate sprinkle brands, from more expensive leading brands to more affordable supermarket own-label brands. What did they think?
Tasting, smelling, looking
We rarely find a bite of bread with chocolate sprinkles genuinely impossible to resist, do we? To determine which chocolate sprinkles are the tastiest and which aren’t, they had to be tested carefully. And that’s what the panel did. They tasted a spoonful of loose chocolate sprinkles, took a bite of bread with chocolate sprinkles and examined the sprinkles themselves closely. Because yes, the appearance of the chocolate sprinkles counts too. So how did they score in terms of colour, shine and appeal? And besides that: did they smell at least a little like chocolate?
Leading chocolate sprinkle brands? Meh
The result has left us a little… thrown off. Because top brands such as De Ruijter and Venz don’t come out of the test particularly well at all. Smits finds De Ruijter’s chocolate sprinkles rather strange-tasting—although the other panel members don’t entirely agree—and Venz’s chocolate sprinkles seem more like milk chocolate than dark chocolate. Even though they are definitely tasting dark chocolate sprinkles. It just goes to show that a more expensive leading brand isn’t always the tastiest.
Own-label brands are a hit
Now for the supermarket own-label brands. The G’woon own-label chocolate sprinkles turn out to be incredibly tasty. They stand out because of their delicious, prominent chocolate flavour and pleasant bite. Panel member Vet likes a crunchy exterior. The downside: they have no aroma. And you do expect that from a chocolate product. Lidl’s chocolate sprinkles, on the other hand, have a strong chocolate aroma—although the flavour turns out to be rather flat. Albert Heijn’s own-label chocolate sprinkles are also well received. Smits does have one critical note: the chocolate flavour quickly disappears in the mouth.
The conclusion: this is the winner
G’woon’s chocolate sprinkles are the star of the test. According to the panel, these are the absolute tastiest chocolate sprinkles in the supermarket. You can buy this own-label brand at Vomar, Spar and Coop, among others. So run to the shop. And pick up a whole loaf of white casino bread and some butter while you’re there. You know what you’ll be having for lunch every day next week (and, alright—breakfast too).
