This is why drinking from a bottle is always more delicious

Maybe this is a little too late, because hooray: the hospitality industry is finally open again. But I do have a feeling that drinking in the park and picnicking are here to stay. The weather does need to get a little nicer, though. But if you want to stock up for that park session, I have a tip for you: avoid drinks from cans. Glass bottles are the way to go.

Because they simply taste genuinely better. And yes, that’s what I think, but it really is true. Science says so, and you can’t argue with that, right? Let me take you through the chemical process.

Good taste + can = not a good combination

Take a can of cola. When you pour it into a can, it can cause a chemical reaction because of the material the can itself is made of. And that doesn’t do the taste any favors. Big companies like Coca-Cola and Pepsi naturally try to prevent this as much as possible, but they can’t eliminate it completely. The same applies to plastic bottles: the material can also give the drink a slightly different taste. Glass causes the least reaction, so it preserves the best flavor.

Draft beer is best

Is it the same with beer? Well, broadly speaking, yes. But if you’re sitting on a terrace, you’re always better off choosing a draft beer than bottled beer. Because draft beer delivers the optimal taste. I think that’s a fairly widely accepted belief, but what exactly causes it? We taste 70% with our noses. With a bottle, less aroma escapes—because the opening is simply smaller—than with a glass, so that’s why beer from a glass will taste better. Besides, appearances matter too. Color also makes us enjoy something more, and beer in a glass shows much more color than beer from a bottle.

So now you know what you have to do. Away with those cans!
