This is why we always have room for dessert

No matter how delicious your main course or meal is, sometimes you really just can’t get that last bite down. But no matter how full you are, as soon as dessert arrives, there suddenly seems to be room again. How is that possible?

Luckily, the fact that there’s always room for dessert isn’t entirely in our heads. In fact, there are three very good reasons for it.

Dessert stomach

Your stomach is just like that friend who never minds when you cancel: wonderfully flexible. When you eat something delicious (or a lot of it), your stomach obediently stretches along. The stomach relaxes and creates new space. The ideal teamwork: you eat and your stomach does the rest of the work.

Sugar rush

Your dessert stomach doesn’t quite explain why we do have room left for dessert, while that risotto really won’t fit anymore. That has to do with sugar. And desserts just happen to be made with lots of sugar (almost) all the time. Sugar stimulates the relaxation of the stomach wall. So your chocolate bavarois very dutifully makes room for itself, so to speak.

This may also explain why some people (hey!) can never stop once they start eating dessert. With every bite of sugar, a little extra space (and a few extra pounds) is added.

It’s always the hormones

And because we blame our hormones for almost everything, this can be added to the list. Is your hormone balance disrupted, for example because you’re not getting enough sleep? Then the hormones that influence your appetite can also become unbalanced. You can eat, eat and eat some more, but you’ll be less likely to feel full.
