This news from McDonald’s makes us very happy
As of 3 July 2021, single-use plastic plates, cutlery and straws will be banned in the hospitality industry. Fast-food chain McDonald’s is getting ahead of the measure and will no longer provide plastic straws with soft drinks from next month. And no more plastic lids on McFlurries.
72,000 kilos of plastic
A clean and sustainable society: that is what the largest hospitality chain is taking responsibility for by no longer handing out straws and lids. Replacing them will save McDonald’s 100 million straws and 17 million McFlurry lids annually, which in total amounts to—brace yourself—72,000 kilos of plastic.
Cardboard lids and straws
In the meantime, work is already underway on a replacement lid. It is made from compressed fibres. The straws will also be replaced with a cardboard version (the HORROR for some). General director Erwin Dito says in an interview with AD that he understands that cardboard straws are less pleasant to drink from, but hopes his guests will take it in their stride, since it is much better for the environment.
Successor
The straws and lids are, incidentally, the first things to be replaced because they most often end up in the street. Other plastic packaging, such as the bag for the Sundae nuts, will follow.
