Back when McDonald’s still had ashtrays: this is what it looked like
Europe’s first McDonald’s restaurant opened in Zaandam in 1971. By now, there are more than 250 restaurants with an M in the Netherlands; worldwide, there are 37,000. Can you still remember the days when that creepy clown was waiting for you at the door, there was an ashtray on the table, and you could order a kind of deep-fried apple pie at McDonald’s?
That nightmare clown, for example—who is he? Ronald McDonald was created as the restaurant’s mascot and, according to the marketing department, is a friendly clown. People who have read It, or seen the film, think differently. But then again, there are Ronald McDonald Houses—guest houses for the families of sick children—so that really is quite friendly. Get rid of the ashtray
That McDonald’s apple pie was permanently removed from the menu, around the same time that ashtrays were banished to the staff room and the hideous tiled floor was demolished. No one misses those tiles, but quite a few fans did love those apple pockets and are now scouring the internet for the recipe for their sweet snack. The eighties are back in fashion—and in music—so perhaps those little apple treats will make their comeback soon too.
