11 things you can order at McDonald’s – but not here

Just as you can’t order a McKroket in Dubai, they keep the Chocolate Filled Donutballs there all to themselves. And if only that were the end of it. Why can’t we order a Dosa Masala Brioche? Or a Le Double Blue Cheese & Bacon?

You can think whatever you like about increasing globalisation, but when it comes to food, as far as I’m concerned, it still doesn’t go nearly far enough. It makes sense that a company like McDonald’s doesn’t try to explain the McKroket to the entire world – vague meat in ragout with a crust on a bun is what you’d call an acquired taste – but it’s still unfair that we have to make do without a McCurrywurst or Big Brekkie Burger. McDonald’s management, could you pay attention for a moment: here’s my wish list.
Switzerland: McRaclette
In Switzerland, McDonald’s has a McRaclette on the menu. Exactly what you’d expect: cheese, cheese and even more cheese. All on a bun with a burger, special cheese sauce, onion and pickles.
France: Le Double Blue Cheese & Bacon
No explanation needed, because every cheese and burger lover’s mouth is already watering when they hear the name of this burger. OK, here goes: two burgers, blue cheese, crispy bacon, fried onions and a touch of mayonnaise. Well done, France.
Italy: deep-fried olives
Nuggets, but made from olives? Order six or nine at a time at McDonald’s in Italy. They’re green olives, filled with a little minced meat, coated in a crispy crust and then (obviously) deep-fried. I want them!
Portugal: Signature Brie
Portugal takes the crown. Their Signature Brie is a burger topped with a thick slice of brie. With extras like honey-mustard sauce and lettuce, but the main attraction is: BRIE! On a burger!
Malaysia: McFlurry Durian
In Malaysia, there’s a McFlurry with durian flavour. Durian is the fruit with the most awful smell in the world, but still… with vanilla ice cream… Apparently, people have to eat this McFlurry outside, too.
Japan: Gracoro burger
In Japan, you can order a Gracoro burger, which is a hamburger-like creation made from macaroni, cream sauce and prawns. It’s turned into a McKroket-style burger, with a bun around it, coleslaw underneath and then you tuck in.

Dubai: Chocolate Filled Donut Ball
Perfect with coffee, according to McDonald’s Dubai: the doughnut with warm chocolate in the centre. But they also offer a round brownie or a banana chocolate muffin. Import those things, come on!
Chile: McPollo Italiano
When I’m on holiday in Chile, I’ll sprint to the nearest McDonald’s, because that’s where they have the McPollo Italiano. A McChicken with guacamole, tomato and mayonnaise. What it has to do with Italy remains a mystery, but it sounds divine!
Australia: Big Brekkie Burger
Good morning, Australia! There, you can order the Big Brekkie Burger for breakfast. Get the entire breakfast buffet in one bite, because a hamburger topped with a potato croquette, egg, bacon, barbecue sauce and melted cheese sits on a toasted bun. Available until 10:30 a.m.
Germany: McCurrywurst
McCurrywurst is, you guessed it, on the menu in Germany. The pieces of currywurst – made from chicken in this case – are served in a cardboard tray with a frightening amount of curry sauce. Seems perfectly feasible for the Dutch market, right?

India: Dosa Masala Brioche
And that Dosa Masala Brioche? It sounds like a dish from a Michelin-starred restaurant, but it comes in one of those cardboard boxes from McDonald’s. At least, if you’re in India. A masala dosa is a pancake made from rice and lentils, with a spicy potato filling. And you get chutney with it. Intriguing…
