This plantdog is IKEA’s newest hotdog

IKEA hotdog 2

Is a visit to the IKEA bistro a regular part of your routine after a shopping session at the Swedish home furnishings giant? From Monday, July 10, you’ll see a new hotdog proudly featured on the menu: the plantdog. A plant-based version of the popular IKEA hotdog.

Lovely, that new EKTORP sofa and BILLY bookcase for your living room. But the real reason you come to IKEA, of course, is the food in the restaurant and bistro. According to FavorFlav’s Rick, the Swedish IKEA meatballs are the very best. And what about that scandalously delicious soft serve (which, incidentally, is backed by some very clever psychology)? The hotdog is also a true icon. IKEA visitors have been queuing up for it for more than 40 (!) years. And from July 10, they’ll also be able to order a plantdog.

This is IKEA’s new plantdog

The plantdog is a plant-based alternative to the chicken hotdog, which we’ve known for almost half a century. In terms of appearance, the dogs look the same. The bite and smoky flavor—which we all love so much—are also the same in both versions. Only the contents differ. The plantdog contains no animal ingredients. Instead, it contains rice protein, onion, carrot and sweet potato.

Cheaper than the hotdog

The original IKEA hotdog was already dirt cheap. You paid less than one euro for it. Good news: the plantdog will cost you absolutely nothing. At €0.89, the plantdog is cheaper than the hotdog. At that price, you can easily order about 10 of them.

IKEA encourages sustainability

That low price is one of the incentives IKEA is using to encourage as many visitors as possible to choose plant-based options. “As a well-known, large retailer, IKEA has a responsibility to encourage sustainable consumption. This means we need to make our plant-based alternatives as appealing as possible,” says Marcel van Geijn, Food Manager at IKEA Netherlands. In addition to the low prices, IKEA also hopes that the recipes for its plant-based and vegetarian products will win over IKEA fans. They’re well on their way: by now, 28 percent already choose the vegetarian Swedish meatballs instead of the meat version, and 18 percent choose the veggie dog instead of the hotdog. From Monday, July 10, we’ll know whether the plantdog is just as popular.
