This supermarket oliebollen mix contains no yeast

Planning to bake oliebollen with a ready-made mix from Koopmans? Check the packaging first, because you might just end up with bricks instead of light, deep-fried dough balls…

Across the country, sheds are once again filling with the greasy smell of oliebollen, and people are frying away at home. Because although most people buy this New Year’s snack from a street stall, there are still plenty of enthusiasts who bake their own oliebollen every year. And secretly, it’s actually quite easy, especially with a packet mix. Until you discover that the batter isn’t rising due to a production error.
Oops, they did it again.
That’s exactly what happened at the Koopmans factory. Some packets of Oliebollenmix Origineel contain no added yeast. As a result, the batter will not rise, and you can forget about light, fluffy oliebollen. The affected packets have a best-before date of 03-02-2022, production code L212447 and a time indication between 02:30-08:30.

Although this concerns just under 1 percent of the total oliebollen mixes produced, it’s still a good idea to check the packet. Anyone with a packet bearing the details above can send it back to Koopmans and receive a refund.
