Tick-tock, the end of Dry January is almost in sight. There’s a good chance you’ve already planned your first drinks again—and with that comes the chance that you’ll start drinking (just a little too much) again. The result: that pounding hangover. But I have good news for you.

Our editorial neighbors at Amayzine have discovered something new: a special vitamin pill that makes your hangover disappear like snow in the sun. The miracle remedy that will make your day is called ‘red ginseng’. In Korea and other Asian countries, it’s already widely taken, usually not for hangovers, but to keep the mind fresh and sharp and improve memory. You can also drink it in a beverage called ‘red ginseng’.

The hangover comes later. Or not.

What was studied? In one study, both men and women were divided into two groups. There were 25 healthy people in total, and they were all served 100 milliliters of whiskey. They were not allowed to consume any other alcoholic drinks. Five minutes after they had finished their whiskey, half of them were given red ginseng to drink and the other half a placebo drink. No one knew what they were drinking. A week later, they repeated the same experiment, only the groups were switched: those who had received red ginseng first were given a placebo afterward. They then had to compare their hangovers. Those who received the vitamin boost clearly suffered less from hangover symptoms. They also had less alcohol in their blood, thanks to the antioxidants in the vitamin, which break down the alcohol.

Super root

And it’s not that strange. In East Asia (Korea, China, Japan), the root of the ginseng plant has been used for thousands of years for health complaints such as loss of appetite, palpitations, insomnia, shortness of breath, impotence and infertility. And from now on, it’s also useful for us Westerners for… killing hangovers.

Costly stuff

Now you’re probably wondering: how do I get my hands on this asap? Good news: you don’t have to go to Korea. It’s readily available in the Netherlands—just Google it and buy it. It is quite expensive, though: 15 sachets of powder for 100 euros. But hey, it really does work, so if you happen to have a very wet January
