TikTok tip: this is the best way to search for a young child who is lost in the supermarket
If you have children, you probably know that losing them in a large store or somewhere else is one of the scariest, most upsetting things you can experience. Especially when they are young and you have not yet been able to make good agreements with them about what to do when you lose sight of each other, the minutes when you do not know where your child is can feel unbearably tense. This mother shared advice on TikTok about what to do if you lose your child in, for example, the supermarket or another large store…
This would also be advisable in a large playground or amusement park. What is very important is that you put your embarrassment aside for a moment and do not think that you should keep your panic to yourself:
The louder, the better
Because what Jess Martini, who blogs and posts about parenting on social media, recommends in this PSA (‘Public Service Announcement’) is searching for your child while calling out loudly. But not, as is probably the first thing that comes to mind, merely calling your child’s name. Instead, make sure you involve other people in your search. And how can you best do that? By giving people, so to speak, an assignment so they know what they are looking for: a very clear description of the child. And when you are walking around yourself, keep repeating it so that the people in the next aisle, or wherever you move to, also hear the message.
Be very specific
So call out a description of what your child looks like, as in Martini’s example: “I’m looking for a boy, he’s five, he has brown curls, he’s wearing a red T-shirt with such-and-such on it,” etcetera—anything that makes him immediately recognizable. That way, people immediately know what they are looking for, making quick recognition possible. And repeat it, loudly.
And be shameless
Again, ignore what other people think (or what you think they think). Almost everyone will want to help you, and the clearer the assignment, the better. This can happen to anyone within a few seconds of looking away, including, as Martini says, ‘the best parents’. And if that means calling out loudly as you walk through the store (or outside): better safe than sorry.
