Tony’s Chocolonely launches three new chocolate bars (our favorite: with sprinkles)

Tony’s Chocolonely

Tony’s Chocolonely is launching three new bars to celebrate Tony’s Open Chain turning three this month. Here you can read what that Open Chain involves and why it is so important. And of course, we’ll tell you what the three new flavors are and which one is our favorite.

Through the open-source initiative Open Chain, any chocolate maker in the world can work according to Tony’s collaboration principles for slave-free cocoa and source their cocoa sustainably and fairly. And that is important, because illegal child labor, modern slavery and deforestation are unfortunately still inextricably linked to the chocolate industry. Tony’s cannot tackle these abuses alone, hence Open Chain.

Fully traceable beans

That means, among other things, that fully traceable beans from cooperatives in Ghana and Ivory Coast are used. Affiliated cocoa farmers also receive a higher price in the long term and are supported in increasing their productivity, so they can earn a living income. In addition, all households of the cocoa farmers they work with are enrolled in CLMRS (Child Labour Monitoring Remediation System) to detect and address illegal child labor.

Finally, the chocolate is made via a separate production line with a separate chocolate tank at Barry Callebaut, the world’s largest chocolate manufacturer. This guarantees that Open Chain cocoa beans are processed separately and segregated and remain fully traceable. In 2019, Albert Heijn, with chocolate brand Delicata, was the first mission ally to join Tony’s Open Chain.

With sprinkles

From now on, 3 exclusive bar flavors will be available on the shelves at Albert Heijn to celebrate the collaboration. The bars come in the following flavors:
1. Milk, caramel, almond, nougat, pretzel and sea salt
2. White, raspberry, biscuit, sprinkles
3. Milk, caramel pecan crunch.

The bars cost €3.49 each.

Delicata’s Open Chain bar is also available in stores, and it sounds like music to our ears too. The flavor is milk stroopwafel… mmm!
