Top find: red wine liqueur!
I’m pretty experienced when it comes to drinks; I’ve tasted a lot and by now have a fairly clear palate of preferences. Of course, that’s highly personal, and while I absolutely loathe anise-flavored drinks, someone else downs Sambuca and raki as if they were lemonade. But with this drink, I can hardly believe that not everyone would find it incredibly delicious. What a discovery: red wine liqueur.
I discovered this drink at The Art of Drinks, which I attended last weekend. It’s not particularly surprising when you consider that the basis of this drink is red wine, made from a special Croatian grape: Teran, from which the wine of the same name is produced in Istria. Incidentally, this is not the same as the Terrano grape and wine from Slovenia and Italy, but a distinctive, flavorful variety that produces full-bodied, high-quality wines. And this wonderful liqueur, too!
Spicy, sweet, exciting
Absolutely delicious, and definitely sweet, but also spicy and robust. The texture is somewhat syrupy, the color a stunning deep red, and if I hadn’t generally been a sensible sort of person, I would have polished off much more than a glass of it. Well, okay, it also had to be tasted as a mixer (a drink with just two ingredients, such as a rum and coke) with a splash of tonic… Also a hit, with those notes of cinnamon and clove combined with the freshness and bitterness of the tonic.

Aura Teranino, as this bottle is called, is available online from, among others, Schermer Wijnkopers & Destillateurs; experts and producers from Hoorn who have been in the business since 1782. So they certainly know what they’re selling, and I can wholeheartedly confirm it: this red wine liqueur is top-notch!
