?Transcending to outer space?#2: Cookies

astrocookies

We previously wrote that it is becoming increasingly realistic to meet one of humanity’s pressing needs in space: brewing beer. But if you thought that was where the pleasurable aspects of the otherwise extremely demanding astronaut life ended, don’t worry: cookies are on their way too!

Package delivery

Zero G(ravity) Kitchen, a company dedicated to food preparation and hospitality in space, has succeeded, in collaboration with a whole bunch of brilliant minds, in sending the world’s first piece of ‘terrestrial’ kitchen equipment aboard a rocket to the International Space Station. So besides 3.5 tons of research materials, satellites and supplies the astronauts needed for their mission, they also received: a mini oven. Also included in the shipment: ‘ready-to-bake’ chocolate chip cookie dough.

Not to bake an entire batch for the crew, but one cookie at a time, and then see how it turns out in a space without gravity. The chances of them becoming ‘flat’ cookies are slim; they expect more of a ball or cylinder.

Out of this world

And will the cookies taste out of this world? We’ll have to wait a little longer until the first ISS astronaut dares to put it to the test and report back. But once again: it’s all for science!
