?Transcending to outer space? #1: Beer

Of course, all kinds of extremely important space-science research is being carried out on the International Space Station, but setting priorities is also a skill: how on earth can we brew beer in space?

AB InBev (which already sells quite a lot of beer on Earth) has stated its mission to brew the first microgravity beer on Mars. The research results could also be useful for mapping agricultural processes on Earth more effectively.

Of course, they’re not simply going to launch a brewing tank into space in a rocket. For now, barley is being transported to the ISS, where the malting process is started. The barley is first soaked in water to increase its moisture content, and then the water is removed. When the first signs of germination appear, the process is stopped by drying the barley, after which it is sent straight back down to Earth. Here, the grain is then compared with ‘Earth-based’ control batches. Ultimately, the aim is to be able to pour a refreshing beer on the Red Planet itself—should it become the tourist hotspot of the next century…
