Trouble surrounding Toblerone chocolate bar: the mountain has to go
Mmm, Toblerone! The milk chocolate bar filled with pieces of nougat and almond is one of our all-time favorites. But there is now some controversy surrounding it. The Swiss mountain Matterhorn may no longer be depicted on it.
When I think of the Matterhorn, I think of a skiing holiday in the Swiss mountains during which I had frozen hands and feet nonstop and sat crying in the ski lift the whole time. It was that icy cold there, brrr! But why does that—admittedly beautiful and highly recognizable—mountain now have to be removed from Toblerone’s packaging?
Swiss, but not entirely
Well: Swiss rules stipulate that national symbols—such as the Matterhorn—may not be used on food product packaging if the products are not made with at least 80 percent raw materials from the country; for milk and dairy products, the requirement is even 100 percent. And that is not the case with Toblerone bars.
Established in Switzerland
Another rule is that essential production must take place in the country itself, Switzerland in this case. That is not the case with Toblerone either; part of the production takes place in Slovakia. So, goodbye Matterhorn on the packaging. A new mountain will appear on the packaging, and instead of the caption ‘of Switzerland’, it will say ‘established in Switzerland’.
