Vegan gets served one banana as a business class meal

Flying has only become more expensive lately — you’ve probably noticed that too. And business class prices are happily following suit. But hey, at least you get something for it. Early boarding, champagne as soon as you’re seated, free goodies like toothbrushes and hand cream, and of course much tastier food than in economy. That’s what you’re paying for, after all. Well, unless you eat vegan.

Kris Chari was flying business class with Japan Airlines and had probably been looking forward to the flight. That’s what I imagine, at least, when people fly business class: or does it also become “normal” when you do it very often? Either way, this is definitely a flight he’ll remember.

“I thought it was just an underwhelming appetizer”

Before the flight, he had shared his dietary requirements: Chari eats vegan. Shortly after takeoff, he was served a banana with chopsticks. He found it a striking appetizer, but okay: the real feast was still to come. Or so he thought.

Meanwhile, the non-vegans were served a trio of tuna, an eggplant salad, cheese with orange compote and a bread roll. And Chari? It turned out that the single banana was all he got for the entire flight. He did add, however, that the banana was “very good.” I can imagine that eating it with chopsticks also makes for an amazing dining experience…

Japan Airlines has since responded: “We will continue adapting our menus to the growing interest and varying needs of our passengers who request special meals, and this valuable feedback from this passenger is part of that.” Honestly? I would have asked for at least part of my money back if I had paid thousands of euros for business class — and was served one banana. Chari is clearly more forgiving than I am, but that may be because he was served champagne with it.
