Watch out: this food can cause pimples, eye bags and flaking

Pimples, a shiny forehead, itchy patches or bags under your eyes? It might just be down to what you eat, according to scientific research. Lots of sugar and fat is not good for your gut, and therefore not for your skin either.

The secret to healthy, glowing skin could well be found in your diet, according to scientists at the University of California. Or rather: in the food that the bacteria in your gut are exposed to. Lots of sugar and saturated fatty acids completely disrupt your gut flora. The result: skin problems such as psoriasis can rear their head, but a dull complexion, eye bags, spots, blemishes and pimples may also be the result.
Flakes
The researchers focused their study on the skin disease psoriasis, an inherited condition in which the skin turns red, starts to itch and develops white flakes. Some patients experience not only skin symptoms, but also problems with inflammation in their joints. The disease is probably related to disturbances in the immune system.
Balanced gut flora
Earlier research by the University of California had already demonstrated a link between an imbalance in gut flora and problems with inflammation throughout the body, including in the skin. This was shown in research involving mice, but the researchers see sufficient reason to expand their research to humans, as they expect the effects may be comparable.
Cut out sugar
The good news: you can easily reverse that too. The researchers noticed that people who started eating more healthily – drastically less sugar, no ready-made meals and fewer trips to Maccie – also visibly improved. Plenty of fruit and vegetables are also very good for fighting pimples, they say.
