We need to talk about that tiny damn trash bin in the kitchen drawer

I have a new kitchen. So far so good (and everyone who’s ever been through a renovation knows that this ‘good’ is a filthy lie, because renovating is nothing short of hell). Still: it looks beautiful, almost grown-up, I’d say, and when I cook on my new kitchen island, I’m over the moon. But there’s one thing that drives me completely insane. That goddamn miniature trash bin in the kitchen drawer.

WHO CAME UP WITH THIS??
The husband, of course, because since the renovation EVERYTHING is his fault. That’s not his fault, he’s very sweet, but it’s the fault of the misery known as renovating. That little trash bin symbolizes everything I hate about renovating. I almost even wish I had that broken, ugly thing from Blokker back. At least you could fit something in THAT.
1 coffee pod and a banana peel
An integrated trash bin (great hangman word—this can’t be a coincidence), the kitchen salesman called it enthusiastically. ‘This way you can clean up all your waste without it being on display.’ Nicely hidden away, he continued, a little trash bin in the drawer with a lid on it and very hygienic too, because a little bag like that fills up so quickly and then you can just throw it away right away. I saw the husband beaming. He likes order and cleanliness, and it must be said: it certainly fills up quickly. After 1 coffee pod and a banana peel, that is. And then the misery begins.
Lid off, full bag out, take it to the gray bin outside, full bag in, back inside, put in a new bag, lid back on, drawer closed, make coffee, drawer open again, lid off, pod in, lid back on, drawer closed. Madness! A tiny trash bin like that is pure SM. And I don’t like SM.
Don’t fall for it
Whoever came up with the insane idea of hiding a tiny trash bin in the kitchen is a massive sadist, it can’t be anything else. All I’m saying is: don’t fall for it. Never let yourself be tempted—not by a kitchen salesman, not by your sweet husband, just never. By no one.
Decorative trash bin
And Christmas still has to happen. Two days of six courses—just imagine how cozy that’s going to be in my kitchen. You get it, tonight I’m ordering a new trash bin. I already have one in mind. A trash bin that looks like a side table. On two little legs. Elegant AND efficient. But first, I need to save my marriage.
