What?! 1 in 3 employees would rather skip the Christmas party
For some, it’s the event of the year: the Christmas party at work. Finally, getting tipsy with that fun colleague from the other department, toasting with that colleague (whom you actually can’t stand during meetings) and knocking back champagne with your boss. We sometimes forget that there are also employees who would rather spend 3 whole months sitting around the gourmet grill with their in-laws. Yet no less than 1 in 3 employees would rather skip the annual Christmas party.
And hey: you really don’t have to be sociable at work all the time – you certainly won’t get fired for it (or, well: according to this employer, you will). But honestly: when we see the reasons why, we can actually understand it a little.
Mainly very embarrassing
We’ve all said something to someone while drunk that we later thought: that was completely unnecessary. When that happens at a work party, we feel extra miserable. That’s exactly what 1 in 5 employees occasionally experience at a Christmas party. Also embarrassing: 1 in 10 people have done something embarrassing at a Christmas party at work. We can fill in the details ourselves, but it’s certain that they were hugely ashamed of themselves.
Women in particular are the party poopers
Who thought women were always the life of the party at Christmas parties? Think again. No less than 48% of women see the Christmas party at work as a mandatory obligation, compared with 29% of men. As many as 34% of women don’t show up at all. But when it comes to that, men really let the side down, since 41% of men would rather stay home than let loose with colleagues at the Christmas party.
The excuse book is opened
42% of employees admit that they have pulled an excuse out of the bag at some point to get out of a work party. ‘The dog ate my homework’, for example. But the hatred of Christmas parties can be even more extreme. 1 in 10 employees find the Christmas party such a terrible nightmare that it affects their happiness at work. What kind of trauma have they suffered?!
