What’s up with the my girlfriend isn’t hungry trend?

This week it went viral: the ‘My Girlfriend isn’t Hungry’ menu option. Extra fries, extra fried chicken or more cheese sticks. And all that for someone who isn’t hungry… What’s up with that?

It’s an age-old story. Once upon a time, there was a couple. They went on a date at a restaurant. One orders a dish with fries on the side. The other ‘isn’t that hungry’ (or is watching their figure) and orders… a Caesar salad.
Or is it?
Then the food arrives. And before the rightful owner of the fries has even dipped a single fry in the mayo, the plate is already three-quarters empty. Eaten. By – yes – the person with the Caesar salad in front of their (Pinocchio) nose. Wait what?! Weren’t they supposed to have no appetite?!
A well-known problem. And honestly: I’m guilty of it sometimes too. Much to my boyfriend’s annoyance. And I fear I’m far from the only one. It’s not for nothing that entire film and TV scenes have been devoted to it. Do you remember Joey doesn’t share food?
Solution
Restaurants now have a solution for that: the ‘My Girlfriend isn’t Hungry’ menu option. Restaurant Mama D’s in the US even went viral with it last week. And it looks like more restaurants are offering this option. Or are currently rushing to the printer for a new menu.

You can secretly order it when your date has just gone to the bathroom. Then just pretend it’s already a normal portion. Bonus points, because it immediately makes it look like you like sharing.
Prefer to make a statement? Then simply order the option in front of your date. But watch out: there’s a risk of getting a side eye here and there. Because what’s your problem, really? Just give me a few fries! Sharing = caring, right?!
Always a winner
Okay, I do get it. I say one thing, do another… and my boyfriend ends up with fewer fries than he expected. In that sense, this seems like a great solution to me. And was the girlfriend really not hungry? Then the eater simply gets plenty. A win-win, then.
At least, people online are very enthusiastic:

And an explanation from a fries thief herself. I can relate to this:
#iMeanLhyk this is so me.
Firstly, I can never make up my mind when ordering. Secondly I'm never hungry, until his food comes. #MyGirlFriendIsNotHungry #LhovIt https://t.co/L68JhjwMnU— 𝐸𝓃𝓎𝒽 (@enyhvad) July 3, 2019
