Whether Feyenoord wins or not: red-and-white tompoucen are flying off the shelves

Feyenoord-tompoucen

The whole of the Netherlands is rooting for the brave players from 010, who will face AS Roma in Tirana on Wednesday (where is that again?) in the battle for the Conference League trophy. A baker in Leerdam is making red-and-white tompoucen, and they’re a huge hit. Even though he’s actually an Ajax fan…

At De Jager bakery in Leerdam, there’s a heated discussion every Monday, because owner Edwin Kamper is an Ajax fan and employee Gerard van de Vliet is a die-hard Feyenoord supporter. Whenever Ajax won a championship, Gerard would grumpily make red-and-white tompoucen with the Ajax logo, but now it’s his turn: Feyenoord will be competing for the trophy, and Feyenoord tompoucen are on display at De Jager. ‘And they’re selling better than the Ajax ones,’ Edwin has to admit honestly.

All leave cancelled

The bakery has more than 450 orders to make over the coming days. They start with the cream, and on the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, all leave is cancelled and every baker at De Jager will be making tompoucen for all the fans in Leerdam. After that, Gerard will head to De Kuip to watch the match and celebrate, with or without tompoucen, because he has Thursday off.

Brilliant!

It won’t surprise you, but bakers in Rotterdam and Dordrecht also came up with the brilliant idea of baking Feyenoord tompoucen. And we haven’t even mentioned the Feyenoord cheese yet, which is sitting on the shelf at a cheesemonger’s in Rhoon.
