Whiskey mold discovered in America
In the US state of Tennessee, they’re currently not very happy with their whiskey. And that’s remarkable, because Tennessee is pretty well known for it; many labels proudly bear the words ‘Tennessee Whiskey’. So what’s going on?
Well, the houses around the various distilleries are becoming infected with a particular type of mold, which they now call ‘whiskey mold’. Its real name is Baudoinia compniacensis, but that’s just a little harder to get out of your mouth. Anyway, that whiskey mold: it’s extremely filthy.
Jack Daniels is being sued
For Christi Long, who lives in Tennessee, enough is enough; she has already spent thousands of dollars keeping her event venue clean. This venue is next to, you guessed it, a Jack Daniels distillery, which she says is the main culprit. Many buildings, but by now also (play)grounds, benches, trees and everything else outdoors are covered in the black whiskey mold.
The mold lives on ethanol (also known as alcohol), which makes it highly resistant to various weather conditions. It can handle drought, as well as high temperatures. Incidentally, this mold occurs at all distilleries producing spirits, so not just whiskey — the Cognac region in France also suffers from it.
For now, Jack Daniels is no longer allowed to expand in Tennessee, much to Christi Long’s delight. But that’s not the end of the matter, because residents believe that too few air filters are still being used, meaning the mold will continue to return unless action is taken. The only other option is to emit less ethanol, and therefore produce less whiskey. But I’m guessing Jack Daniels isn’t exactly keen on that…
