Sometimes they’re so embarrassing that everyone whispers about them for months whenever the people involved walk by, but usually it’s simply a good story that everyone can laugh about together. It creates a story that all colleagues can relate to and join in on. Even the colleagues you wouldn’t normally chat with so readily during lunch. That’s precisely why it’s actually a pretty good idea to have a big night out with your colleagues every now and then.

And if something awkward happens—something you would normally be ashamed of for the rest of your life? Those are exactly the moments that create a stronger bond between colleagues. You’ve experienced things together and have memories of a hilarious evening that you can joke about together, refer to as an inside joke, and you simply get to know each other better: that professional buffer you normally have at the office is gone, and everyone shows their true colors.
So it’s a great plan to stay out really late with your colleagues for an evening! Maybe you can even submit the receipts to your boss under the guise of “team building.” Win-win!
