Why is the tastiest part of the Raketje in the smallest tip at the top?
Do you always save the best for last too? Then you probably know that this is pretty difficult with a Raketje. The very, very tastiest part of the ice pop, the red tip, has to be eaten first. But why is that delicious red piece actually at the top, in the smallest part of the ice pop?
When I open a bag of M&M’s or Skittles, I have a specific order in which I eat them. I have for years. Green, orange and yellow go first, while red (and brown for M&M’s and purple for Skittles) come last. Those are the tastiest, after all. It’s all in my head, of course – all M&M’s simply taste like chocolate – but still… I also have a clear preference when it comes to the Raketje. Red is the best part of the entire ice pop – and I think (almost) everyone agrees with me.
Raketje by OLA
The traditional Raketje’s recipe for success has been the same for years. At the bottom there’s pineapple flavour, orange in the middle and raspberry at the top. And if the tip of the Raketje is everyone’s favourite, why do they choose to tease us by making such a tiny piece of raspberry? Nederland Voedselland spoke to Robin Misdorp from OLA. He gives us the first reason. If you look at a real rocket, meaning the gigantic thing that shoots into space, it’s a fact that the nose gets extremely hot. The red colour of the Raket ice pop refers to that. Aha.
Golden flavour combinations
But that’s not the only reason. The flavour progression of the Raketje – first raspberry, then orange and finally pineapple – has been carefully thought through. First you taste raspberry, then a combination of raspberry and orange, followed by a combination of orange and pineapple and finally pineapple. According to Robin, the flavours in those two combinations go perfectly together. Well, there’s something to that, of course.
Like a rocket
The Raketje has been our country’s most popular ice pop for around 60 years. Sales of the ice pop still go like a rocket every year: 55 million are sold annually. The chances that they will ever change the recipe for success are slim. They have done so once, though, but it was not at all well received by Raket fans.
