Chill: these ice creams contain far fewer calories than you thought

Good for our mood: yes, but good for our bodies: perhaps a little less so. Still, not all ice creams contain as many calories as you might think. In fact, the ice creams you least expect it from turn out not to be extreme calorie bombs at all.

You probably understand that a pear ice pop contains fewer calories than a chunky Magnum. Makes sense: Magnums are made with dairy ice cream and chocolate, while a pear ice pop consists largely of water (okay, and sugar). Sometimes, a chocolate ice cream makes you feel as if you’ve reached the maximum number of calories for the day after just one bite. But there’s good news. There are chocolate ice creams that won’t immediately make your scales explode!

Low-calorie chocolate ice creams

And we’re talking about… Mars, Snickers and Twix ice creams. You know, our favorite chocolate bars in ice cream form. A Mars ice cream contains 132 calories, a Twix ice cream 124 and a Snickers ice cream 145. By comparison: a regular Mars bar contains 229 calories, a regular Twix (with 2 chocolate fingers) 246.5 and a regular Snickers 244. And did you know that a McFlurry Twix or a McFlurry Snickers, for example, also contains far more calories than the supermarket ice cream versions? Both McFlurries contain around 450 calories. Did I make your day or what?!

Oreo

Mars, Twix and Snickers ice creams have been in supermarket freezers for quite a few years now. Oreo ice creams are relatively new. It was bound to happen, of course, because Oreo has now been incorporated into so many flavors and products that we’ve lost count. Good news if you’re a fan of the black cookie with the creamy layer: the Oreo mini ice creams in supermarkets really don’t contain as many calories as you think. At just 126 calories, you could even eat two. Or three. Or the whole six-pack, if you like.

Mars vs. Raketje

The Mars, Twix, Snickers and Oreo ice creams obviously aren’t the healthiest choices. They all fall into the category of dairy ice cream with chocolate, just like Magnum. And those contain considerably more sugars and fats than a water ice pop. But do we always want to make the healthiest choice? No. Sometimes a Mars simply goes down better than a Raketje. (Just like the new Lotus Biscoff ice creams, by the way—but at 312 calories, we can rightly call those a little calorie bomb.)

Here’s where you can buy them

Fancy filling your freezer? At Albert Heijn, you can get them for €3.99 (Twix and Snickers ice creams) and €3.69 (Mars ice creams). You can get the Oreo mini ice creams for € 3.79 per box. Run, don’t walk!
