You’ve known for ages that pasta water shouldn’t disappear down the drain. But the water in which you’ve soaked or cooked rice is definitely not waste either. Apparently, it can even make your hair grow faster!

Many more kitchen staples have a double life as stain removers, cleaning products or beauty products. An avocado mask works wonders for your skin, place cucumber slices or tea bags on your eyes and those dark circles are gone, and with peanut butter you can get chewing gum out of your hair. By the way, did you know that cola works as a stain remover and that you can lure fruit flies away from the fruit bowl with a little wine vinegar?

Expensive hair-growth products

But this beauty trick from the kitchen cupboard is new to us. It turns out that the water in which rice has been cooked contains valuable carbohydrates. One of these substances is inositol, which is also found in expensive hair-growth products and hair tonics for baldness. Winner! According to beauty vloggers, you should pour the rice water over your head after washing your hair. Don’t rinse it out; just let it dry. And after a few weeks, you’ll notice a difference: your hair will be stronger, grow faster and fall out less.

The beauty vloggers are enthusiastic. Another tip from the pros: add a few drops of lavender oil or rose oil to the rice water, otherwise you’ll smell like rice all day. And if you don’t fancy pouring rice water over your head: the internet also says it’s good for your skin (wipe a cotton pad soaked in rice water over your cheeks every day), and with ice cubes made from rice water, you can help minimize pores and achieve healthy, glowing skin. So, who’s going to try it?
